“I chose to learn German as I was always interested in German culture– my great-grandfather in India spoke fluent German and utilised the language to close business deals. Even though I never got to meet him, I was always fascinated by the idea of an ‘Indian who knew German’.

I loved the language almost instantaneously. It became something to look forward to during the school day. In Year 8, I won best speaker for the AGTV Poetry competition in my class, and I was sent to the Regional Final. This further fuelled my determination to keep working hard in German class. My love for the language was definitely encouraged by having brilliant teachers all throughout. Thank you to those four teachers for being passionate, steadfast and supportive in their teaching and creating engaging and exciting lessons for students to thrive in.

Little did I know, learning German would take me all the way to Berlin, where I would live for half a year, learning the ins-and-outs of the European legal system and exploring the Berlin music scene. I also made some of the best friends while in Berlin who have undoubtedly changed my life.

My future plans with German are to continue championing the language in my music and lyricism. I write German-inspired lyrics not only for myself but for other artists as well. I am so proud to say learning German has shaped my career in music and has opened a new world of opportunities for me. My advice to students is to keep up your German beyond school as it is such a gift to know another language. You never know where it might take you.”
